Comparing Common Core Middle School Reading with NC Essential Standards: Information and Technology

The first thing I notice when I compare the standard for technology and reading is the use of many words such as; evaluate, analyze, and determine. These key words and skills for students are found in both sets of standards.

Students will use their skills from reading to be able to research. (6.RP.1 and 8.RP.1 ) Their reading skills will also be used to evaluate information. (7.SI.1) Commone Core Reading Inforamtional Text grade 6 Key Ideas and Details, requires students to evaluate what they read and pick out key information just as ITES 7.SI.1 states that students need to be able to evaluate resources. Both sets of standard emphasize point of view in text.

Under the Intergration of Knowledge and Ideas in Reading Standards Information Text #7, students need to be able to understand text in different media or formats. This standard works well with all the ITES that deal with SI: Sources of Information. This is also true for Literature standard #7 where students need to be able to compare and contrast what they have read in literature to an audio or video verison.

Since many of the standards in English/Langauage Arts and Information and Technology go together well, this will be able to help teachers plan lessons and allow students to be success in both areas.
